Catani is a new development on the urban edge of a small town on
the R62 route in the semi-arid Klein Karoo district in Southern
Africa, a development of 9 private dwellings overlooking a scenic
valley and majestic mountainscapes, set in areas of commonage
cleared of alien vegetation re-planted with indigenous and
fruiting Flora.
Hybrid green technology used throughout includes envirofriendly-treated
timber shell roofs, dry-pack and mortared local slate/adobe/cob
green masonry construction, straw-leichtlehm insulation. 80% of
the building materials comprise recycled components; walls of
salvaged Oregon/Ponderosa Pine and site-found earth and slate.
Maximized Community involvement through value-addition obtained
via labour-based contracts provided work and learning throughout
the project – Only Sanitary ware, plumbing and some finishes were
city-sourced. Skills transfer and empowerment will ultimately be
evidenced more in its ramifications/outreach - ‘green’ additions
and alterations to the worker’s own housing.
9 private erven are available, 4dwellings already exist. |
